Full description
This is a tuk-tuk tour, and that is the point of it. Colombo is a city of short hops, one-way streets and market lanes that a coach cannot enter, so you cover far more of it in three hours from the back of a three-wheeler than you would in a van. The driver doubles as your guide, stops where you want to stop, and gets you into the parts of Fort and Pettah where the traffic is people rather than cars.
The route usually starts in Fort, the old walled port quarter the Portuguese founded, the Dutch rebuilt and the British filled with banks and warehouses. The Old Parliament and the surrounding colonnaded facades are the obvious survivors, but the building worth walking into is the Dutch Hospital, the oldest structure in Fort, now a stone courtyard of restaurants and shops with its original beams still overhead.
From Fort you cross into Pettah, the wholesale market district, where each street sells essentially one trade: hardware on one, textiles on the next, dried fish and spices on another. The red-and-white striped Jami Ul-Alfar mosque, finished in 1908, marks the middle of it. This part of the trip is loud, close and fast, and the tuk-tuk is the right vehicle for it.
The tour then loops through the quieter south of the city. Gangaramaya Temple is a working Buddhist temple whose buildings borrow from Sri Lankan, Thai, Indian and Chinese styles all at once. Independence Square, built to mark the 1948 handover from British rule, is a colonnaded hall on a lawn where Colombo comes to walk in the evening.
Finish at Galle Face Green, the colonial-era seafront promenade. If you are on the late afternoon departure, the isso wade carts, selling deep-fried prawn fritters, set up along the wall as the light drops, and it is the best twenty minutes of the tour.
